What Defines a Specialty Coffee?

If you're a true coffee lover or roaster probably you heard about “specialty coffee”, but the question is how do you know : What is specialty coffee?

Now there is a big trend of coffee shops and roasters offering specialty coffee but in this post, we’ll break down the definition, the importance of traceability to the origin and quality standards to make it possible.

How Do We Make Specialty Coffee Possible?

Creating specialty coffee isn’t a solo act—it’s a collaboration from the harvesting to the cup. Here is how we do it:

 Direct relationships with producers:

We source our specialty coffee beans through direct trade relationships with coffee producers, not anonymous middlemen. By building long-term partnerships at origin, we ensure:

·       Full traceability—we know exactly where every coffee bean comes from.

·       Ethical sourcing practices— paid fairly, often well above C-market price.

·       Collaborative quality control—clear communication around harvesting methods, processing, and flavor goals.

Paying for dedication:

In the world of specialty coffee, it's not about quantity—it's about quality. We pay higher prices for high-quality, ethically sourced coffee beans that reflect the dedication of each producer.

By investing in quality over volume, we:

  • Encourage producers to focus on consistency and flavor development
  • Help raise industry standards for fair compensation in coffee production above the market of commercial coffee
  • Contribute to better living conditions and long-term economic stability for coffee-growing communities.

Quality:

In specialty coffee, quality isn’t just a matter of taste—it’s measured, tested, and certified. We ensure specialty coffee quality by partnering directly with coffee producers to meet SCA coffee grading standards. From high-altitude cultivation and selective hand-picking to expert processing and cupping, each coffee must score 80+ points to qualify. We often  cup their samples together in each harvest—tasting and giving feedback to improve future lots.

While quality is at the heart of specialty coffee, what matters even more are the relationships behind it. By working directly with coffee producers, we’re not just sourcing ethically grown, high-quality coffee—we’re helping to build  stronger communities and support family livelihoods.

When you choose Specialty coffee, you’re supporting a responsible supply chain rooted in respect, transparency, and lasting impact—from farm to cup.
